This is an early 1970’s model 22 Outdoorsman in stellar condition.  It most definitely was made towards the end of the use of the seven spacer stack on non-leather handles.  Possibly the most under appreciated of the  Randall line, and at the same time, perhaps the best buy in the Randall line. This model comes loaded with standard features that would be options on other models.
 
The Orlando forged stainless steel blade designed by a shop employee who was an avid  hunter and taxidermist, first showing up in the twenty-first printing of the catalog in April 1971. This has basically the same blade profile as the current GTR Special – Gary T Randall non-catalog  model, but should  say the GTR has the same blade profile as the Outdoorsman.    
 
The 4 5/8″ stainless steel blade combines a raised point, generous width, well-rounded belly, and long bevel from back to the cutting edge. The latter being what has come to be known as the #6 style grind.   Note also, this is the very tail end of the separate “S” stamp, leading me to believe the very few examples like this I have seen are quite possibly pre-production pieces.
 
Overall this is a great example of  the birth of a new model in the Randall line.
